Description
In an age-old tradition that symbolizes the true esprit de corps of the U.S. Navy, those experiencing periods of transition are strengthened by the words of their comrades in arms, who wish them “Fair Winds and Following Sea” in their new endeavors.
Whether an officer is retiring from active duty or a cadet is just beginning his or her naval career, this sentiment reminds all those who serve in the U.S. Navy that they are part of something much larger than themselves. It also captures the adventurous spirit of those who willingly brave the unknown to confront difficult and dangerous challenges in the pursuit of a more secure and peaceful world. Rooted in its maritime heritage, today the expression applies equally to the Navy’s pilots, shore command forces, and administrative personnel.
This medallion is in honor of the men and women of the U.S. Navy, whose tireless service and unwavering commitment continues to strengthen the cause of freedom on near and distant shores.
The coin is minted in a brass alloy and given an antique bronze finish. Crested by an eagle with wings outstretched, with carriers, ships, submarines and jet depicted beneath the phrase “FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS.” Both the obverse and reverse contain a space for engraving.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
