The USS Seawolf (SSN-21) is the lead ship of the Seawolf-class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines, renowned as an exceptionally quiet, fast, and lethal undersea vessel designed for stealth, speed, and deep diving, capable of hunting submarines, attacking surface ships, and launching Tomahawk cruise missiles for land strikes. The USS Seawolf (SSN-21) represents the pinnacle of 20th-century submarine technology for the U.S. Navy. Commissioned in 1997. It’s a multi-mission platform for sea control, power projection, special operations, and is homeported at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Washington.
The contract to build USS Seawolf (SSN-21) was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics on 9 January 1989 and her keel was laid down on 25 October 1989. She was launched on 24 June 1995, sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Dalton, and commissioned on 19 July 1997. The 7-year 9-month time period from keel laying to commissioning is the longest for a submarine in the U.S. Navy.
The USS Seawolf (SSN-21) is featured in a 1998 episode of the documentary Super Structures of the World: Seawolf. The program followed her construction and sea trials.
On 22 July 2007, USS Seawolf transferred from her previous homeport of Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, to Naval Base Kitsap, Washington.
In 2015, USS Seawolf was deployed to the Arctic region for six months
In July 2020 USS Seawolf deployed into the Arctic area of responsibility. She conducted special operations and pulled into multiple European ports. Port calls included HMNB Clyde in Faslane Scotland, and Gibraltar, and briefly in Tromsø, Norway. Seawolf‘s deployment was the first US Navy deployment during the coronavirus pandemic.
This coin is struck in a shiny frosted finish and features special transparent enamel combined with a 3D UV-printed representation of the ship that gives an impression that can be both seen and felt. Including their motto: Cave Lupum meaning “Beware the Wolf”. The reverse proudly displays the U.S. Navy Emblem with a space for engraving.
