According to a long-standing nautical tradition, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar for the first time is a rite of passage worthy of recognition.
The “Order of the Rock” is a traditional, unofficial maritime honor for sailors who successfully transit the historic Strait of Gibraltar, marking entry into a legendary rite of passage like ancient mariners passing the Pillars of Hercules, often recognized with a special certificate or patch as part of naval traditions alongside other honors like Shellback (equator crossing) or Blue Nose (Arctic crossing).
Minted in a brass alloy and accented with an antique bronze finish, this coin was struck using special “splash” dies which give an exceptionally deep relief. The reverse has a space for engraving the date the recipient crossed the strait, and a second area for the name of the recipient.
Each coin measures 1.75 inches (44mm) in diameter.
