Description
A major recognition of outstanding meritorious service, the Meritorious Service Medal celebrates outstanding achievement or meritorious service rendered specifically on behalf of the United States. This challenge coin version of the Meritorious Service Medal is suitable for display or can be carried as a memento by the recipient or the recipient’s family and comrades-in arms. This coin upholds the significance of the Meritorious Service Medal and can even be engraved with the honoree’s name and date of award.
The Meritorious Service Medal honors any member of the United States Armed Forces, on active duty or inactive reserve, who distinguishes himself or herself by outstanding meritorious service. The MSM was previously awarded as a decoration for achievement during peacetime; effective 11 September 2001, this decoration may also be bestowed in lieu of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in combat. Normally, the acts or services rendered must be comparable to that required for the Legion of Merit but in a duty of lesser, though considerable, responsibility.
The obverse features the colors of the Meritorious Service Medal ribbon, imbued with bold enamel, and depicts the medal’s distinctive eagle, wreath, and star design. The reverse has space available for engraving.
