Description
Commissioned in 1946, Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City was originally established as a single-plane detachment responsible for search and rescue throughout the Great Lakes region.
Today, Air Station Traverse City operates as one of two air units within Coast Guard District Nine and maintains an area of responsibility that covers 1,500 miles of international border and all five Great Lakes. The men and women who serve this unit support every Coast Guard mission, including ice breaking, search and rescue, and marine environmental response. Vigilantly patrolling the nation’s largest interior waterways, they are a vital force for the protection of America’s borders and the strengthening of America’s homeland defense.
This coin salutes all those who serve Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City. The obverse features this unit’s official emblem, which showcases a rescue helicopter hovering above a rendering of the Great Lakes and contains the motto “Great Lakes Guardian.” The reverse bears the Coast Guard seal.
Struck in a brass alloy and gently brushed with an antique finish, this coin is imbued with enamel accents on both sides.
