Description
The USCG Air Station San Francisco’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Point Mugu was a temporary facility established in 2016 at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) after the closure of Air Station Los Angeles allowing Coast Guard air operations (MH-65 Dolphin helicopters) to cover Southern California until a new, permanent Air Station Ventura was built at Point Mugu, which officially opened in late 2024. This FOB expanded Air Station San Francisco’s reach, providing critical search and rescue, law enforcement, and maritime safety for a vast coastline.Â
US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco has been protecting the San Francisco Bay area through war and peace since 1941. As the San Francisco metropolitan area has grown over the last 80 years, so has the Air Station San Francisco presence grown from one PBY Catalina Flying Boat to a fleet of MH65C helicopters covering Search and Rescue operations along 300 miles of Pacific coastline from Point Conception to Fort Bragg.
The bold US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco coin is a symbol of the Station’s dedication to duty, and to the bravery and skill of aircrew in dispatching their responsibilities. This handsome challenge coin is finished in a matte blackened nickel with bold enamels, the obverse showing a patrol helicopter over the Golden Gate Bridge, with the outline of the Bay Area in the background. The reverse is the dedication of FOB Point Mugu with bold enamel colors and the famous Hollywood sign.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
