Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, the Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) was created in 1997 to strengthen the spaced-based command and control capabilities of America’s Army.
Comprised of an elite corps or scientists, engineers, analysts, and support personnel, SMDC conducts space operations, contributes research and development to aid in the production of aerospace technology, and directs the planning, integration, and coordination of operations in support of U.S. Strategic Command missions. Committed to enhancing the flexibility and power of America’s military arsenal, the highly skilled members of the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command utilize the most advanced aerospace technology to relay critical navigation, communications, and intelligence information to forces in combat, helping to ensure the success U.S. Military operations throughout the world.
This shield shaped coin salutes the mission of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command to develop superior technology to advance the strength of America’s Armed Forces. Against a blue enameled backdrop, the obverse features the SMDC emblem. The reverse bears an American Bald Eagle in full flight above a banner that contains the SDMC motto: “Secure the High Ground.”
Minted in a brass alloy and finished in bronze, this coin is imbued with rich enamel on both sides.
Each coin measures 1 3/8 inch x 1 3/4 inch (34mm x 44mm) Shield.
