Originally opened in 1957 as an Air Defense Command base, Minot Air Force Base became a major Strategic Air Command base in the early 1960s, with both nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles and manned bombers and aerial refueling aircraft. With the establishment of the Air Force Global Strike Command in 2009, the missiles and manned bombers were transferred back to Minot.
The 5th Bomb Wing is an element of the Global Strike Command is the host unit at Minot AFB. The primary mission of the 5th Bomb Wing is to maintain and operate B-52H bombers. Minot AFB is one of two remaining bases with B-52’s.
Since 1957, Minot AFB has served as a vital installation of the U.S. Air Force, supporting its warfighting units throughout the world.
This coin pays tribute to the pivotal role of Minot Air Force Base in managing America’s nuclear electronic technology to ensure the U.S. military’s continued air superiority.
