Description
Thwarting danger is routine for the International Ice Patrol, who monitor the treacherous waters between the US, Canada, and Europe to eliminate the risk of naval iceberg collision. For several decades, the International Ice Patrol has maintained the support of several governments including Belgium, Canada, Finland, Spain, and Norway, among others.
Since 1913, the Ice Patrol has surveyed these shipping lanes, determined to prevent maritime disasters by traversing the lethal, iceberg-filled waters of the Grand Banks off the Newfoundland coast. It is the only location in the world where massive icebergs threaten and endanger maritime vessels navigating a major shipping route.>
To commemorate their commitment in serving the international maritime community, this shield-shaped challenge coin is as unique as the brave and hardy pilots, sailors, and technicians of the Ice Patrol. Minted in antique nickel, the obverse features the International Ice Patrol badge in white enamel, with imbued enamel details in vibrant Coast Guard red and in brilliant blues, conveying the frigid, glacial waters they patrol.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
