Description
The USS Vandegrift (FFG-48) was a force for defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate for the U.S. Navy, she succeeded in even the most demanding of missions. Named after General Alexander Archer Vandegrift, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his exceptional heroism in the Solomon Islands campaign of World War II, the USS Vandegrift and her crew lived up to his legacy of pride in service and strength of character.
Commissioned on 24 November 1984, and decommissioned 19 February, 2015, the USS Vandegrift had a displacement of approximately 4,100 long tons and stretched some 453 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine torpedoes, along with other weapons, she was equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She was also the home to two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Vandegrift, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a starboard image of the USS Vandegrift sailing through the ocean. The reverse displays insignia of the 1st Marine Division, commanded by the ship’s namesake in the Battle of Guadalcanal, imbued with bold colorful enamel.
