Description
The USS Stout (DDG-55) is vital to defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer for the U.S. Navy, she is marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.
Named after Rear Admiral Herald F. Stout, the commanding officer of the destroyer USS Claxton during World War II, the USS Stout and her crew live up to his legacy of pride in service and strength of character. Admiral Stout, then a Commander, aided his task force by sinking five heavily armed enemy warships to establish a beachhead on Bougainville Island.
Commissioned on 13 August 1994, the USS Stout has a displacement of approximately 8,900 long tons and stretches some 505 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home to a SH-60 Seahawk helicopter.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Stout, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a portside view of the USS Stout cutting through the ocean along with her motto, “tough, rugged, fast, and ready.” The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Stout.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) round in diameter.
