The USS Spruance (DDG-111) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. As an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer for the U.S. Navy, she is impressively equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. The USS Spruance is named after Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance, an American naval legend who commanded U.S. naval forces in two historic battles: the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Commissioned on 1 October 2011, the USS Spruance has a displacement of approximately 9,200 long tons and stretches some 510 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home for two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters.
This coin is minted in bronze, enhanced with a shiny gold overlay, and pays tribute to the USS Spruance, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a portside view of the USS Spruance cutting through the water with the ship’s motto, “LAUNCH THE ATTACK” along the upper edge. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Spruance, imbued in bold colored enamel.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) round in diameter.
