Description

The USS San Jacinto (CG-59) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser for the US Navy, she is superbly equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.

The USS San Jacinto was named after the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle during the Texas Revolution. Facing an overwhelming Mexican Army, General Sam Houston engaged and defeated famed Mexican General Santa Anna in a fight that lasted a mere 18 minutes. The final tallies were demoralizing for the Mexicans with 630 soldiers killed and 730 captured. The Republic of Texas lost an incredibly paltry 9 men. Texas soldiers captured Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, the following day and held him as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican armies leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.

Commissioned on 23 January 1988, the USS San Jacinto has a displacement of approximately 9,600 long tons and stretches some 567 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home of two Seahawk LAMPS III helicopters.

Minted from solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this coin pays tribute to the USS San Jacinto and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a port and starboard view of the USS San Jacinto and a longhorn cow skull. The reverse displays the ship’s seal.

Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) round diameter.
