The USS San Diego (LPD-22) plays a critical role in America’s naval superiority across the globe. A San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, she is well equipped to support amphibious operations in any theater.
Commissioned on 19 May 2012, the USS San Diego has a displacement of approximately 25,000 tons and stretches some 684 feet in length. Due to its amphibious support capabilities, the USS San Diego is ideally suited to support the Navy’s critical mission abroad, and can carry a fully equipped battalion of approximately 800 Marines.
This coin pays tribute to the USS San Diego and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a scene with a starboard view of the USS San Diego cutting through the water near her home port, and namesake, San Diego, California. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS San Diego.
Minted in brass and gently brushed with an antique finish, this coin is struck in high relief, highlighting certain elements of the design for a bold look and a hefty feel.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inches, (44mm) in diameter.
