Description
The USS Russell (DDG-59) is vital for defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer for the US Navy, she is marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. Named for Rear Admiral John Henry Russell and his son, Commandant of the Marine Corps John Henry Russell, Jr., the USS Russell and her crew live up to their legacy of pride in service and strength of character.
Commissioned on 20 May 1995, the USS Russell has a displacement of approximately 8,900 long tons full (6,800 light) and stretches some 505 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home to a SH-60 Seahawk helicopter.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Russell, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a portside view of the USS Russell cutting through the ocean with the ship’s crest in the upper left. The reverse displays the badge of the USS Russell, imbued with bold colored enamel.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
