The USS Peleliu (LHA-5) plays an important supporting role in America’s naval superiority across the globe. A Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, she is well equipped to support amphibious operations in any theater. LHAs provide the means to transport, deploy, command and support all elements of a Marine landing force of over 2,000 troops during an assault by air and amphibious craft.
Designed to be versatile, Peleliu has the option of simultaneously using helicopters, Harrier jets, and Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC), as well as conventional landing craft and assault vehicles in various combinations. LHAs’ missions, while operating with an aircraft carrier battle group, conduct prompt, sustained operations at sea, primarily as the centerpiece and flagship of the Amphibious Ready Group. The ship’s extensive medical facilities consist of six medical operating rooms, four dental operating rooms, medical laboratories and hospital facilities capable of caring for 600 patients.
In carrying out its primary mission, the 820-foot long, 39,000-ton Peleliu will transport and land ashore troops, tanks, trucks, artillery, and other supplies necessary to support an assault.
This coin is minted in bronze, enhanced with a shiny gold overlay, and pays tribute to the USS Peleliu, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a scene with a portside view of the USS Peleliu cutting through the waters of her homeport of Naval Base San Diego. The reverse displays the badge and crest of the USS Peleliu, imbued with bold colored enamel.
Each coin measures 1.75 inches (44mm) in diameter.
