Description
The USS Oak Hill (LSD-51) plays a critical role in America’s naval superiority across the globe. A Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ship, she is well equipped to support amphibious operations in any theater. The USS Oak Hill is named for the historic home of our fifth U.S. President, James Monroe.
Commissioned on 8 June 1996, the USS Oak Hill has a displacement of over 19,000 tons and stretches almost 610 feet in length. Due to its amphibious support capabilities, the USS Oak Hill is ideally suited to support the Navy’s critical mission abroad, and can carry a fully equipped detachment of approximately 500 Marines, ready to strike for freedom wherever they are needed.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Oak Hill, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Oak Hill, imbued with bold colored enamel. The reverse contains a scene with a portside view of the USS Oak Hill cutting through the water, with the ship’s motto, “NATION’S PROTECTOR.”
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) round in diameter.
