Description

The USS McCampbell (DDG-85) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. As an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer for the U.S. Navy, she is built to prevail against enemies on the sea, above it, or below it. The ship is named after Captain David McCampbell, Medal of Honor recipient and highest-scoring ace to survive World War II.

Commissioned on 17 August 2002, the USS McCampbell has a displacement of approximately 9,200 long tons and stretches some 509 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home for two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters.

This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS McCampbell and her dedicated crew. The obverse contains a port view of the USS McCampbell cutting through the ocean, with Mt. Fuji and a Shinto arch (or tori) in the background as a tribute to her forward deployment port of Yokosuka, Japan. The reverse features the shield and crest of the USS McCampbell and its motto, “Relentless in Battle,” imbued with bold colored enamel.

Each coin measures 2 1/4 inch x 1 3/4 inch (57mm x 44mm) Oval.
