Description
The USS Makin Island (LHD-8) plays a critical role in America’s naval superiority across the globe. A WASP-class amphibious assault ship, she is well equipped to lead amphibious operations in any theater. LHDs provide the means to transport, deploy, command and support all elements of a Marine landing force during an assault by air and amphibious craft.
Designed to be versatile, Makin Island has the option of simultaneously using helicopters, Harrier jets, and Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC), as well as conventional landing craft and assault vehicles in various combinations. LHDs’ missions, while operating with an aircraft carrier battle group, conduct prompt, sustained operations at sea, primarily as the centerpiece and flagship of the Amphibious Ready Group. The ship’s extensive medical facilities consist of six medical operating rooms, four dental operating rooms, medical laboratories and hospital facilities capable of caring for 600 patients.
In carrying out its primary mission, the 844-foot long, 44,000-ton Makin Island will transport and land ashore troops, tanks, trucks, artillery, and other supplies necessary to support an assault.
This coin is minted in bronze, enhanced with a shiny gold overlay, and pays tribute to the USS Makin Island, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a scene with a portside view of the USS Makin Island cutting through the water. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Makin Island, imbued with bold enamel.
Each coin measures 1.75 inch (44mm) in diameter.
