Description
Launched on May 21, 1960, the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) is one of the most enduring ships in U.S. Navy history.
The second U.S. Navy ship named in honor of the birthplace of powered flight, the USS Kitty Hawk is a massive supercarrier, stretching 1,047 feet in length and supporting a full complement of 85 combat aircraft and more than 4,500 officers and crew. Capable of cutting through the water at 35 knots, the Kitty Hawk has a displacement of 60,000 tons. Supporting the Navy’s Carrier Air Wing Five, the Kitty Hawk has completed more than a dozen deployments and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its role in supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001.
This coin honors the proud legacy of the USS Kitty Hawk, salutes the service of her dedicated crew, and marks her decommissioning. The obverse contains a detailed rendering of the ship along with the aircraft used by the Wright Brothers for their first flight. The reverse honors the service of the Kitty Hawk with the words “48 years of excellence,” with a blank plate perfect for engraving a name and dates of service. Minted in deep relief using a special “splash minting” process, this coin is struck in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze. Accented with our proprietary antiquing process, the coin has unsurpassed detail that evokes a feeling that the ship will sail right out from the coin. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that describes the USS Kitty Hawk’s contribution to America’s national security.
Each coin measures 1.75 inches (44mm) in diameter.
