Description
The USS Germantown (LSD-42) plays a critical role in America’s naval superiority across the globe. A Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship, she is well equipped to support amphibious operations in any theater. The USS Germantown is named for the Battle of Germantown, a major turning point in the American Revolutionary War that brought French allies to the American cause.
Commissioned on 8 February 1986, the USS Germantown has a displacement of over 16,000 tons and stretches some 610 feet in length. Due to its amphibious support capabilities, the USS Germantown is ideally suited to support the Navy’s critical mission abroad, and can carry a fully equipped detachment of approximately 500 Marines ready to strike for freedom wherever they are needed.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Germantown, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a scene with a portside view of the USS Germantown cutting through the ocean on a mission. The reverse displays two soldiers, one from America’s past and one modern, with the words, “One Team! One Mission! One Fight!”
Each coin measures 1.75 inch (44mm) in diameter.
