Description
The USS Frank Cable (AS-40) is vital for supporting our forces that defend American interests and protect freedom across the globe. An Emory S. Land-class submarine tender for the US Navy, she is impressively equipped to supply our submerged forces with whatever they need, even the most demanding of missions. She is named after Frank Taylor Cable, an early pioneer in submarine development who piloted the first United States Navy submarine, USS Holland, during its pre-commissioning trials. He went on to found the Electric Boat Company, the primary manufacturer of submarines for the United States during the Twentieth Century.
Commissioned on 29 October 1979, the USS Frank Cable has a displacement of nearly 23,000 long tons and stretches some 649 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, she provides food, electricity, water, consumables, spare parts, medical, dental, disbursing, mail, legal services, ordnance, and any parts or equipment repair that a submarine may require. To accomplish this, the ship has a physical plant similar to that of a small town, including 53 different specialized shops.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Frank Cable, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a portside view of the USS Frank Cable cutting through the ocean to repair an ailing warship. The reverse displays the crossed flags of the United States and Military Sealift Command.
Each coin measures 2 inches (50mm) in diameter.
