Description
The USS Decatur (DDG-73) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer for the US Navy, she is marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.
The fifth vessel to bare the proud name, the USS Decatur and her crew have lived up to Commodore Stephan Decatur’s legacy of pride in service and strength of character. Commodore Stephan Decatur was one of the first post-Revolutionary War heroes, earning his reputation in the Barbary Wars, the Quasi-War with France, and the War of 1812. His natural talents for command, his concern and care for his men, and his extraordinary victories made him the icon for the United States Navy. His many naval triumphs against the British, the French, and the Barbary Pirates firmly established the United States as an up and coming world power.
Commissioned on 19 June 1998, the USS Decatur has a displacement of approximately 8,886 long tons and stretches some 505 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home to a SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter.
