Description
To serve on the USS Barry (DDG-52) is to be a part of the U.S. Navy’s historical birth. Show your solidarity with the Father of the American Navy, John Barry, and the fourth ship to bear his name, with this stunning challenge coin.
Initially a young cabin boy, John Barry quickly became the dauntless and deft captain President George Washington appointed as Commander of the entire U.S. Naval fleet. In 1794 Washington charged Barry to build and then command the fledgling U.S. Navy. His tenacity, gallantry, and ingenuity shaped his respected reputation, leaving behind a legacy of maritime protocols and traditions still employed today.
Today, the fourth USS Barry and crew carry on Commodore Barry’s dedication and fortitude. The guided-missile destroyer roams the oceans armed with courage and combat power to raze enemy targets on, above, or below the sea. The ship has guarded our liberties across the globe from the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean, from the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.
Minted in bronze, and highlighted by bold enamel, this challenge coin honors the crew of the USS Barry (DDG-52). The obverse features the ship slicing through the sea with Old Glory waving proudly in the background. The reverse displays the ship’s seal, along with her motto, “STRENGTH AND DIVERSITY.”
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) round in diameter.
