The USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) is vital for supporting our forces abroad, aiding in the defense of American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. A Mercy-class hospital ship for the U.S. Navy, she is impressively equipped to heal our fighting forces, even in the most demanding of missions. USNS Mercy’s primary mission is to provide medical and surgical services to support forces deployed ashore and naval amphibious forces afloat. She also provides mobile surgical hospital service for US Government agencies during disaster or humanitarian relief. USNS Mercy and her crew do not carry any offensive weapons, and firing on the Mercy would be considered a war crime.
In active service with the United States Navy since 8 November 1986, the USNS Mercy is the second largest ship in the Navy, displacing a staggering 69,000 tons, surpassed only by Nimitz-class supercarriers. The Mercy has an impressive array of services available including radiological services, a full laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy and burn care, intensive care unit, dental services, and even her own morgue. These are in addition to 1000 patient beds, 12 operating rooms, and 80 intensive care beds, more than most large hospitals.
This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS USNS Mercy, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a starboard view of the USNS Mercy cutting through the ocean on a mission to save lives. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS USNS Mercy, imbued with bold color enamel.
