The USCGC Rush (WHEC-723) has held a dynamic place in defending American borders and serving our country’s interests where needed. A high endurance cutter, she is well equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.
Named after Richard Rush, former Attorney General of the United States under James Madison, the ship and her crew have lived up to Rush’s legacy of a varied but exceptionally distinguished career. The USCGC Rush has seen action throughout the Pacific, from Vietnam, to Alaska, to Central America. She provided critical support in the Vietnam War and transitioned to patrolling Pacific waters from Alaska to Hawaii for dangerous drift-net fishing. Rush has also been instrumental in preventing drug smuggling operations, single-handedly intercepting a drug boat in 2003 and recovering 105 bales of cocaine.
Commissioned on 16 November 1968, the USCGC Rush has a displacement of approximately 3,250 tons and carries a crew of over 167 officers and enlisted personnel. Due to its multitude of support capabilities, the Rush is ideally suited for a variety of critical missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, homeland security, and even humanitarian operations.
Minted from solid bronze, using special deep-relief splash dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this coin pays tribute to the USCGC Rush and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains the USCGC Rush crest with the words: “Semper Paratus,” which means ‘Always Ready.’ The reverse displays the logo of the U.S. Coast Guard bordered by the ship’s motto, “Kia\’i Kai No Ka Oi” meaning The Best in the Coast Guard.
Each coin measures 1.75 inches (44mm) in diameter.
