Description

This captivating challenge coin evokes the proud heritage of the USCGC Midgett (WHEC 726). For any member of this unit, it is a solid symbol of time spent in service—a tangible reminder of patrols through Alaskan waters, missions and port calls completed, and friendships that will last forever.

Commissioned in 1972, the USCGC Midgett is the twelfth and last of the Coast Guard’s 378-foot High Endurance Cutters. Her namesake is Chief Warrant Officer John Allen Midgett, who was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for his heroic rescue of the entire crew of the torpedoed British tanker Mirlo in 1918. Homeported in Seattle, her normal areas of responsibility include the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. The USCGC Midgett supports a crew of 24 officers and 160 enlisted men and women.

Minted with a bronze antique finish, this coin pays tribute to the USCGC Midgett and the dedication of her crewmembers, past and present. The obverse features the ship at sail and the motto “DEDICATO SERVITIUM EXCELLENTIA.” The reverse displays the emblem of the US Coast Guard.

Each coin measures 1.75 in (44mm) in diameter.
