The USCGC Bear (WMEC-912) plays a vital role in protecting American borders and extending our interests abroad. A medium endurance cutter, she is well equipped to bring a swift and decisive measure of force to any scenario.
Named after USRC Bear (AG-29), a steam schooner built in Scotland and serving with the United States Treasury Department in the United States Revenue Cutter Service’s Alaskan Patrol, the modern vessel lives up to its proud heritage.
Commissioned on 4 February 1983, the USCGC Bear has a displacement of approximately 1,800 tons and length of 270 feet. Due to its multitude of support capabilities, the Bear is ideally suited for a variety of critical missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, homeland security, and even humanitarian operations. In 1986, Bear was called upon during the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and searched over 1900 square nautical miles to find pieces of the shuttle.
Minted from solid bronze, and finished with enamel hilights, this coin pays tribute to the USCGC Bear and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains the crest of the USCGC Bear, accented by bold enamel highlights, and surrounded in a golden braid. The reverse displays the seal of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
