The US Coast Guard Air Station North Bend coin commemorates the hundreds of successful Search and Rescue missions completed, the dangerous helicopter sling rescues in the foulest of weather, and evacuations of injured loggers trapped in the wilds of the Coast Range—all performed by the exceptional pilots and crew of US Coast Guard Air Station North Bend. Air Station North Bend crews use five HH-65C Dolphin helicopters to cover the rugged coastline extending northward for more than 220 miles from the California/Oregon border. Aircrew courage and skill under the worst flying and sea conditions is legendary. They are constantly vigilant in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and in maintaining maritime law enforcement.
A symbol of aircrew heroism and dedication to duty, the US Coast Guard Air Station North Bend challenge coin shows the Station crest, an eagle in flight snatching a salmon from the waters of the bay, symbolic of a rescue helicopter snatching a victim from the waters of the ocean. The obverse is finished in rich green, blue and gold enamels. The reverse shows the US Coast Guard crest floating on a background of sea-blue.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
