Strategically located at the westernmost tip of the Florida Keys, USCG Station Key West faces the daunting responsibility of covering 55,000 square miles of open ocean that border the territorial seas of Cuba and the Bahamas. The USCG Station Key West challenge coin commemorates the heroism and dedication of the crews who have braved the worst imaginable sea and storm conditions to rescue those in peril, or to provide maritime law enforcement and illegal migrant interdiction on the high seas.
Sector Key West traces is history back to 1824 when a 63-foot schooner named Florida sailed into the Port of Key West where it remained, chasing pirates, preventing smuggling and rescuing those in distress. USCG Station Key West Command now operates the most modern patrol boats, has multiple boat stations, and enjoys crews trained to serve with trademark determination and bravery befitting the finest Coast Guard force in the world.
The USCG Station Key West challenge coin is finished in rich enamel colors. The obverse shows the Station crest, with the banner “Defenders of Paradise.” The reverse is the United States Coast Guard crest on a sea-green background.
