Commander (CDR) is one of the most important Officer rankings in the United States Coast Guard. This coin captures the spirit and integrity of that rank.
Because all Coast Guard Officers are considered line Officers, Commanders are deeply involved on a daily basis with the Coast Guard’s vital missions of maritime safety, security and stewardship. Their role is that of active leadership involving search and rescue, coastal security and defense readiness, and marine resources protection. Commander is the Officer rank just below Captain, the equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, Air Force, or Marines.
The US Coast Guard Commander proudly wears a silver oak leaf collar insignia, and on formal uniforms displays the three medium sleeve and shoulder braid stripe insignia.
