Description

Situated opposite Cape Henry, Cape Charles defines the northern side of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay and was an important point for railroad passengers of old ferrying between trains on the Delmarva Peninsula and Norfolk. Three lighthouses have been built just offshore on Smith Island to mark this important cape. The foundations for the first two now lie hidden beneath the sea, victims of the unstable shoreline of Smith Island, but the third Cape Charles Lighthouse, a fully automated skeletal tower, still serves mariners from its island home.

This coin is dedicated to all those who serve Coast Guard Station Cape Charles for their courage and commitment. The obverse features the emblematic lighthouse. The reverse bears the Coast Guard seal.

Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
