Located on the Western side of the hook, USCG Sandy Hook is a vital component of the US Coast Guard Sector New York. Gunner’s Mates, one of the oldest ratings in the Coast Guard, facilitate the training and qualifications for all Coast Guard members at the Station and work out of the Armory at Sandy hook, forming an integral part of Sector New York’s readiness.
One of the original stations built in 1848, USCG Sandy Hook is one of the most famous life-saving stations. The site has changed several times of the years but USCG Sandy Hook has never wavered in its commitment to protecting American freedoms and securing the maritime border.
Minted from nickel alloy, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this medallion is dedicated to the former and current Coast Guard members who have proudly served this great Station in the role of Gunner’s Mate. The obverse, imbued with bold colored enamel, displays the crest of Sector New York. The reverse features a gunner’s mate insignia surrounded by their motto, “nonsolis radios sediouis fulmina mitto” which means “I bring not the warmth of the sun, but the rage of the storm .”
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
