Sector Buffalo has oversight of 15 Coast Guard Stations/Units that are responsible for approximately 570 miles of shoreline in the Eastern Great Lakes from ‘Vermillion, Ohio, to Ivlassena, NY. This area includes the NY Finger Lakes Region, Niagara Falls, and the Erie Barge Canal from Buffalo to Little Falls, NY. Within their respective areas of responsibility, these stations or units have the primary responsibility for conducting and supporting all Coast Guard missions. The US Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) services the buoys, lighthouses and markers in the area of responsibility. It is located next to the site of the Buffalo Light at the entrance to the Buffalo River.

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo protects vital economic and security interests of the Eastern Great Lakes, including the safety and security of the maritime public, our natural and economic resources, the maritime transportation system and the integrity of our maritime border. The Sector responds to over 1,000 Search and Rescue cases and performs over 2,500 vessel boardings annually. The Sector’s Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) is responsible for the proper operation and correct positioning of over 230 navigational aids, including the placement and removal of 96 seasonal aids.
