Description
US Coast Guard Air Station Houston is known as the “Best Li’l Air Station in Texas.” Since 1963, through peace and war, Air Station Houston has served the local community and the nation in a wide variety of critical roles and missions.
Strategically located in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico, Air Station Houston pilots and personnel have braved the worst imaginable sea and storm conditions to rescue those in peril. Their response to natural disasters, search and rescue missions, environmental protection and law enforcement cases is legendary. With only about 90 personnel they cover an immense area with their HH-65C Dolphin helicopters. Flood relief, oil tanker collisions, burning barges, tropical storms—all have witnessed the courage and skill of the pilots from Air Station Houston.
The handsome US Coast Guard Air Station Houston challenge coin can be carried with pride. The front defines the station and its surroundings. Enameled in bright colors, it is a collage of an outline of Texas with the Lone Star, the Astrodome, an off-shore oil rig, the Space Shuttle, and a profile of the HH-65C Dolphin helicopter. The reverse is the US Coast Guard Crest.
Minted in a brass alloy, this coin is imbued with durable enamel in bright colors.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
