Description
Ulysses S. Grant, the legendary Civil War General and the eighteenth President of the United States, was born on April 27, 1822 in the small town of Point Pleasant, Ohio, located twenty-five miles southeast of Cincinnati.
A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Grant served with distinction in the Mexican- American War (1846-1848) before rising to national fame as the Commander of the Union Army in the Civil War.
Skillfully outmaneuvering his Confederate counterparts, he marshaled strategic victories at Vicksburg and throughout what is known as the Overland Campaign, a series of battles fought during May and June of 1864, which ultimately led to the victory of the Union cause.
In 1869, Grant defeated former New York Governor Horatio Seymour to win the presidency, becoming one of America’s youngest Presidents at the age of 46. As President, Grant focused his efforts on helping the nation recover and rebuild from the disastrous war between the states.
As part of the Illinois Commemorative Medallion Series, this coin pays tribute to Ulysses S. Grant’s heroic service as a military leader and as America’s eighteenth President. The obverse features a rendering of General Grant. The reverse bears the Seal of the State of Illinois.
Minted in a brass alloy, this coin is finished in antique bronze.
