Description
A twin-engine helicopter with a single, four-bladed main rotor, the UH-72 Lakota is manufactured by the American Eurocopter company, which was awarded a 2006 contract to produce 345 UH-72s to replace the UH-1H and OH-58A/C helicopters in the Army and Army National Guard fleets.
The first of these helicopters was delivered to the United States Army in December of 2006. The US Army estimated that delivery of the planned 345 aircraft would continue until 2017.
The UH-72 is designed to take on a variety of missions, ranging from general support and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) to personnel recovery and counter-narcotics operations. The UH-72 Lakota takes its name from the Native American Lakota tribe, known as fierce defenders of their homeland, as well as for their mobility, firepower, and endurance.
The UH-72 Lakota challenge coin will fit right into the challenge coin collection of helicopter enthusiasts and Army pilots alike. This challenge coin salutes all the service men and women who provide support to the warriors who are charged with preserving peace and freedom.
This UH-72 Lakota challenge coin is minted in solid bronze with an antique finish using special deep-relief dies for exceptional quality and detail. The obverse of this challenge coin features front, side, and top profiles of the UH-72 Lakota in the background, while a UH-72 Lakota dominates the foreground. The reverse of this coin features a US Army emblem.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
