Description

Modern legends and defenders of the homeland will carry with pride the challenge coin of the USCGC Bertholf (WMSL-750), the first of the U.S. Coast Guard’s new Legend-Class cutters. Named in honor of the first Commandant of the Coast Guard, Ellsworth Price Bertholf, a Coast Guard legend who led a harrowing Alaska rescue in 1898 that included a never-before-attempted 1,600-mile overland journey. Each cutter in the class will similarly be named for a Coast Guard legend. As the first, the Bertholf bears the motto, ”Legends Begin Here,” which is featured on the reverse of the coin.

Commissioned in 2008 on Coast Guard Day, the Bertholf sails as part of the Coast Guard’s Deepwater program.
