Created in 1949, the Department of Defense is charged with the awesome responsibility of coordinating the world’s largest and most technologically advanced fighting force. Under the leadership of the President and Commander-in-Chief, it exercises day-to-day control over the U.S. Armed Forces and oversees all American military operations from conception to completion.
As America’s largest employer, the Department of Defense supports 1.4 million active-duty soldiers, 1.2 million Guard and Reserve personnel, 2 million military retirees and their families, and 654, 000 civilian employees. Headquartered at the Pentagon, it operates from more than 6,000 locations worldwide.
The Pentagon has served as the headquarters for the Department of Defense since its inception. It is the largest office building in the world, with more than six million total square feet of space, including corridors that stretch 17.5 miles. The Pentagon has been identified so strongly with the Department of Defense for more than five decades, that often the two terms are freely interchanged.
This medallion is dedicated to the men and women of the Department of Defense who serve their country proudly every day. The obverse features a depiction of the famous Pentagon building. The reverse displays the seal of the Department of Defense.
Minted from solid bronze and given antique finish, this coin is accented with richly-colored enamels.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) Round.
