Description
Since 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard has served as America’s elite maritime law enforcement and coastal security force.
Braving the elements, the courageous sailors of the Coast Guard have risked their lives to strengthen America’s homeland defense and safeguard the nation’s vital interests overseas. Seeking aid and protection from above as they perform their duty, these men and women have invoked the name of St. Elmo, Patron Saint of Mariners.
St. Elmo’s Fire is the name given to a meteorological phenomenon in which an electrical discharge, produced from a lightning strike, visibly emanates from a tall grounded object, such as the mast of a ship. According to maritime legend, one flame portends bad weather on the horizon while two flames signals fair skies ahead.
This coin salutes the enduring commitment of America’s Coast Guard sailors, who continue to provide safe harbor to all those who travel the sea. The obverse depicts the figure of St. Elmo standing guard over a vintage Coast Guard vessel. The reverse bears the seal of the U.S. Coast Guard.
