Description
Based in Juneau, Alaska, the Seventeenth District is responsible for the waters around Alaska, performing search and rescue, environmental protection, and the maintenance of waterways, specifically icebreaking. More than 1,900 members of “Team Coast Guard” accomplish a wide variety of missions in the 17th District.
Alaska spans a distance normally covered by four time zones and a coastline larger than that of the Lower 48, making this district of the highest importance to Alaska. Because Alaska is such a maritime state, search and rescue and fisheries law enforcement are important missions in Alaska, saving lives and enforcing international treaty obligations and U.S. fisheries regulations.
This coin honors all who serve the 17th District.
Struck in a brass alloy and gently brushed with an antique bronze finish, this coin is imbued with richly-colored enamel on both sides.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
