Description
On September 11, 2001, America suffered a series of deliberate and destructive terrorist attacks designed to weaken the foundations of our nation’s freedom.
Responding without hesitation and with little regard for their own personal safety, America’s fire and rescue professionals rushed headlong into burning buildings, striving with every step to save the lives of their fellow citizens.
The heroes who so faithfully answer duty’s call are inspired by the courageous and compelling example of Saint Florian of Lorch, the third-century Roman Soldier who suffered persecution and death for protecting Christians from fire’s deadly force.
This coin salutes the efforts of all those who battle the smoke and flames each day to keep us safe and pays special tribute to those who gave their lives in the service of their fellow Americans on September 11, 2001.
The obverse depicts St. Florian of Lorch and a modern-day firefighter extinguishing a blaze. Featured on the reverse is a rendering of the unforgettable image of three New York City Firefighters raising the American Flag above the ruined landscape of ground zero.
Minted in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold.
