Description
Located near Omaha, Nebraska, Offutt Air Force Base is the headquarters for United States Strategic Command, the 55th Wing, and Air Force Weather Agency. The base began in 1918 as an Army Air Service balloon field but was renamed in 1924 after Nebraska native 1st Lieutenant Jarvis Offutt, a decorated Word War I aviator. Throughout the years the base has adapted to the defense needs of the United States.
United States Strategic Command is one of nine Unified Combatant Commands of the United States Department of Defense. It is charged with space operations, including military satellites, information warfare, missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, global strike and strategic deterrence, and combating weapons of mass destruction. Along with the 55th Wing and Air Force Weather Agency, Offutt AFB is home to organizations that protect the men and women in uniform, as well as American citizens, across the globe.
Minted in solid nickel, and then imbued with bold enamel highlights on both sides, this coin is dedicated to the men and women of Offutt AFB who fight every day to make the world safe for freedom, keeping the American way alive and well. The obverse features a rendition of the state of Nebraska with the location of Offutt AFB marked with a star. The reverse displays the insignia of the organizations that call Offutt home with the words “GLOBAL VIGILANCE FOR AMERICA” across the top.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
