Description
After its eruption, the best-known mountain in the Cascade Range was without a doubt, Mount St. Helens. Her distinctive dome stands 8,363 feet high and visible as far away as Portland.
After a series of violent eruptions blasted more than 3,000 feet of elevation from its northern rim on May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens has attracted a growing number of adventurers and sightseers to its base each year. Hoping to catch a glimpse of the massive horseshoe-shaped crater that now occupies most of the mountain’s eastern facade, visitors from all over the world come to be inspired by, learn from, or scale the slopes of St. Helens.
This coin is dedicated to all those who have a soft place for this interesting mountain, or have left the beaten path to climb to her crater rim. The obverse features a detailed rendering of Mount St. Helens, complete with its elevation. The reverse has a pair of classic ice axes below an open area available for engraving a personal message.
