Description
Mount Shasta is the second highest peak in the Cascade Range and the most prominent peak in northern California. The USGS (and our hiking medallion) has the summit recorded at 14,162 feet. Although a recent resurvey of the peak differs and tags it at 14,179, most official records still reflect the older, lower figure.
Mount Shasta’s massive volcanic cone contains California’s only true glaciers, which extend down along the mountain’s north and east slopes. Challenged by its varied terrain and its shear size, climbers from all over the world flock to Mount Shasta to test their skill and endurance. Guarded by cascading snowfields, whipping winds, and sudden storms, the mountain’s steep slopes yield only to those climbers who have come prepared for an arduous ascent.
This distinctive coin recognizes the outstanding achievement of those who have mastered Mount Shasta’s difficult terrain. The obverse contains a rendering of Mount Shasta and includes its elevation. The reverse depicts a climber steadily advancing toward the summit.
