Looming like an ice-lodged fortress over the valleys below, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. With an elevation of 14, 411 feet, it reigns as the tallest mountain in the Cascade Range.
With its vast permanent snowfields and deeply crevassed ice flows, Mount Rainier presents a significant challenge to even the most expert climbers. Of the more than 10,000 climbers who attempt to ascend Rainier each year, only half are successful in reaching the summit. Requiring precision skill, expert conditioning, and a preparedness for extreme fluctuations in weather, Mount Rainier demands absolute excellence from those brave enough to venture to her lofty heights.
This coin is dedicated to those who have braved Mount Rainier’s tough terrain in pursuit of the ultimate climbing challenge. The obverse contains a rendering of Mount Rainier and includes its elevation. The reverse depicts a mountain climber steadily ascending up Mount Rainier’s steep slopes.
