Looming like an ice-lodged fortress over the valleys below, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. With an elevation of 14,410 feet, it reigns king as the tallest mountain in the Cascade Range.
With its vast permanent snowfields and deeply crevassed ice flows, Mount Rainier presents a significant climbing challenge. Of the more than 10,000 climbers who attempt to ascend Rainier each year, only half are successful in reaching the summit. Millions more come to walk the forests and meadows of the parks photogenic slopes.
This coin is in honor of this mountain of royalty, and dedicated those who hold fondness to this giant of a mountain, or who venture on her lowest forests or highest glaciers. The obverse contains a rendering of Mount Rainier and includes its elevation. The reverse depicts a classic pair of ice axes below an open area available for engraving a personalized message.
