Strategically located just outside the nation’s capital, Langley Air Force Base serves as headquarters for Air Combat Command.
Integral to the advancement of American aerospace technology for more than eighty years, the base was founded in 1917. Following World War I, it was used extensively by the Army Air Corps to develop new combat aircraft and to train pilots in anti-submarine warfare tactics. During World War II, Langley units played a decisive role in neutralizing the threat posed by German U-Boats in the Atlantic. In 1946, the base became headquarters for the newly formed Tactical Air Command and has since served as a vital installation of the U.S. Air Force, supporting its warfighting units throughout the world.
