Description
Comprehension of the “Christmas Story” is a task for a lifetime, perhaps never fully achieved. A mind can wrap around the story of an angelic proclamation. We can understand astrologers whose life’s work was studying the heavens following an auspicious star to the place where it led. We can picture a young mother with a baby, because most have seen a mother holding a new-born. But how to comprehend “a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2: 13-14)
The shepherds saw the scroll of heaven rolled back to reveal a vision of the heavenly hosts, a revelation undoubtedly etched on their souls’ memory for all time. Words failed in the description, yet they attempted to tell all they met what “they had heard and seen.” Incredulous, “all they that heard wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.” Only Mary, the mother of Jesus, truly comprehended. She “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.”(Luke 2:13-20)
