Description
Patrolling the Atlantic and Arctic oceans for over 100 years, the International Ice Patrol monitors and reports the movement of icebergs, saving countless lives throughout the years. Sea craft traveling through the great circle rely on the accurate reports provided by the Patrol to avoid major and minor collisions that could leave their vessels at the bottom of the cold, dark ocean. The International Ice Patrol – 100 Year Anniversary coin celebrates the proud legacy and heritage of this critical organization.
Following the sinking of the RMS Titanic, the International Ice Patrol was created to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again. Fixed wing aircraft now conduct a bulk of the reconnaissance work, patrolling the Grand Banks area from February until August, the most likely times icebergs become a hazard.
Minted in the USA from solid nickel alloy, this coin celebrates the men and women who tirelessly patrol the waters of the Arctic and Atlantic, searching out life threatening nautical obstructions. The obverse features the full color emblem of the International Ice Patrol’s 100th Anniversary. The reverse depicts the logo of the United States Coast Guard.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
